- County Name:
- Unless otherwise specified, active health care professionals are
assigned to their primary practice location county. If their primary practice
location is unknown, they are assigned to their mailing address county.
- Total Residents:
- A physician who is presently enrolled in a postgraduate medical
education training program at Duke University Medical Center, University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill-UNC Hospitals, East Carolina University-Pitt County Memorial
Hospital, Bowman Gray School of Medicine-North Carolina Baptist Hospitals, Greensboro
AHEC-Moses Cone Hospital, Charlotte AHEC-Carolinas Medical Center, Coastal AHEC-New
Hanover Regional Medical Center, Mountain AHEC in Asheville, and Fayetteville AHEC. (
Definition of the NC Medical Board)
- Total Physicians:
- Doctors of medicine and doctors of osteopathy licensed by the NC Medical Board who are in-state, non resident-in-training, non-federal providers and who are active or have unknown activity status.
- Specialty:
- Specialty is self-reported by the physician at the time of licensure renewal for the NC Medical Board.
- Total Prim Care:
- Total physicians who have self-reported a primary specialty of family practice, general practice, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, or pediatrics.
- Total FP:
- Total physicians who have self-reported a primary specialty of family practice.
- Total GP:
- Total physicians who have self-reported a primary specialty of general practice.
- Total IM:
- Total physicians who have self-reported a primary specialty of internal medicine.
- Total OB/GYN:
- Total physicians who have self-reported a primary specialty of obstetrics/gynecology.
- Total Peds:
- Total physicians who have self-reported a primary specialty of pediatrics.
- Total Other Specs:
- Total physicians who have self-reported a primary specialty other than family practice, general practice, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, or pediatrics.
- Total Fed MDs:
- Physician whose principal employer is the federal government which includes physicians in the armed services, US Public Health Service, Indian Health Service, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
- RNs:
- Registered Nurses licensed by the NC Board of Nursing who are in-state and who are active or have unknown activity status. Nurse Practitioners are included as Registered Nurses.
- LPNs:
- Licensed Practical Nurses licensed by the NC Board of Nursing who are in-state and who are active or have unknown activity status.
- Physician Assistants:
- Physician Assistants licensed by the NC Medical Board who are in-state and who are active or have unknown activity status.
- Nurse Practitioners:
- Nurse Practitioners licensed by the NC Medical Board who are in-state and who are active or have unknown activity status.
- Chiropractors:
- Chiropractors licensed by the NC Board of Chiropractic Examiners who are in-state and who are active or have unknown activity status.
- Dentists:
- Dentists licensed by the NC Board of Dental Examiners who are in-state and who are active or have unknown activity status.
- Dental Hyg.:
- Dental Hygienists licensed by the NC Board of Dental Examiners who are in-state and who are active or have unknown activity status.
- Optometrists:
- Optometrists licensed by the NC Board of Examiners in Optometry who are in-state and who are active or have unknown activity status.
- Pharmacists:
- Pharmacists licensed by the NC Board of Pharmacy who are in-state and who are active or have unknown activity status.
- Phys. Ther.:
- Physical Therapists licensed by the NC Board of Physical Therapy Examiners who are in-state and who are active or have unknown activity status.
- PT Assts.:
- Physical Therapy Assistants licensed by the NC Board of Physical Therapy Examiners who are in-state and who are active or have unknown activity status.
- Podiatrists:
- Podiatrists licensed by the Board of Podiatry Examiners of the State of North Carolina who are in-state and who are active or have unknown activity status.
- Psychologists:
- Practicing Psychologists licensed by the NC Psychology Board who are in-state and who are active or have unknown activity status.
- Psych. Assoc.:
- Psychological Associates licensed by the NC Psychology Board who are in-state and who are active or have unknown activity status.
- Total Pop.:
- Total Population from the 1990 census adjusted for the reporting year. Source: Office of the Governor, Office of State Planning.
- Pop/Physician:
- Total population per physician is calculated using the following formula: (Total Pop.) / (Total Physicians).
- Pop/Primary Care Physician:
- Total population per primary care physician is calculated using the following formula: (Total Pop.) / (Primary Care Physicians).
- Pop/Dentist:
- Total population per dentist is calculated using the following formula: (Total Pop.) / (Dentists).
- Pop/RN:
- Total population per RN is calculated using the following formula: (Total Pop.) / (RNs).
- Pop/NP:
- Total population per nurse practitioner is calculated using the following formula: (Total Pop.) / (NPs).
- Pop/PA:
- Total population per physician assistant is calculated using the following formula: (Total Pop.) / (PAs).
- Active:
- Licensed individuals who are currently practicing in their respective field.
- Inactive:
- Licensed individuals who are retired, employed in another field, or otherwise not practicing in their respective field.
- Unknown Activity Status:
- Licensed individuals for whom practice status is not reported. Experience has shown that these usually are persons just entering their field. For most purposes they are considered active.
- In-State:
- Licensed individuals who practice in North Carolina if they are active or who reside in North Carolina if they are inactive. If business county is missing for active individuals, home county is used.
- Out-of-State:
- Licensed individuals who practice outside of North Carolina if they are active or who reside outside of North Carolina if they are inactive. If business county is missing for active individuals, home county is used.
