The MarketScan® Commercial Claims and Encounters and Medicare Supplemental Databases from Thomson Reuters (Healthcare) Inc. contain de-identified, person-specific health data including clinical utilization, expenditures, insurance enrollment/plan benefit, inpatient, outpatient, and outpatient prescription information. The data cover over twenty million individuals annually, include private sector health data from approximately 100 payers, and can be linked to track detailed patient information across sites, types of providers, and over time.

The Commercial Claims and Encounters and Medicare Supplemental Databases have the following structure:

         Inpatient Services file
         Outpatient Services file
     Outpatient Pharmaceutical Claims file
     Annual Enrollment Summary file
     Enrollment Detail file
     Aggregated (not person-specific) Populations file
     RED BOOK™ Supplement (includes variables related to drug prescription analysis)

The Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research holds an annually renewable license for the Commercial Claims and Encounters Database for the years 2000 through 2009. The Principal Investigator is M. Alan Brookhart, PhD, UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, Department of Epidemiology; the Data Custodian is Roger Akers, Deputy Director, Sheps Center.

     Intramural (UNC) use sponsored by:

          Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy, School of Pharmacy

     Training grants are covered under intramural use.
     Pre-negotiated user fees will be assessed for grant-funded projects.
