Video showcases community advisors’ experience in engaged research in Latino community

A recently completed PCORI-funded research project called Padres Efectivos at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research in partnership with El Futuro, Inc. asked community members to provide advice on the researcher’s work in mental health care for Latino children. The advisors had the opportunity to participate in the research process, which created a better project for both the community and researchers.

This video highlights the work of the advisory group, and the experience of the advisors. It was created by Noel Heaney, a neurobiology student at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, as part of a project while shadowing Principal Investigator Dr. Kathleen Thomas. The work of the group will be continued with funding for a new project from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The mentor parent group has been led by Dr. Mónica Pérez Jolles who recently joined the faculty at the University of Southern California’s Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work. Dr. Perez Jolles continues her involvement in this project as part of an inter-institutional partnership.
