Autism Society of North Carolina is an association of parents, professionals, students, and others that is dedicated to raising the visibility of autism and broadening services for individual who have autism and related disorders of communication and behavior. The association is a chapter of the Autism Society of America.

Clinical Center for the study of Development and Learning (CDL) is a multidisciplinary research, technical assistance and leadership training center. Its work covers the broadest range of dysfunctions and handicaps, from learning disorders and attention deficits to mental retardation and multiple handicapping conditions.

Community Alternatives Program, NC Division of Medical Assistance. The Community Alternatives Program for Persons with Mental Retardation or Developmental Disabilities (CAP-MR/DD) provides community services to individuals of any age who qualify for care in an intermediate care facility for the mentally retarded (ICF-MR). The Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services manages the daily operation of the program under an agreement with DMA. The program is available statewide through local area mental health, developmental disabilities and substance abuse programs. CAP-MR/DD served approximately 6,226 people in SFY 2001 and offers an alternative to institutionalization.

Developmental Evaluation Centers (DEC) / Child Developmental Service Agencies are a statewide network of 18 regional centers under the auspices of the Women's and Children's Health Section, Division of Public Heath, NC Department of Health and Human Services. Each center employs teams of professional with pediatric specialties in medicine, social work, psychology, speech and language, physical therapy, occupational therapy, special education, nursing and nutrition. DECs are an essential part of NC early intervention system for young children and their families. Through a state interagency agreement, DECs are the coordinative agency under the IDEA for evaluation of children under five years of age.

Early Childhood Link is a training, consultation and assistance project that facilitates provision of transdisciplinary, early intervention services to children (ages0-5) with the low incidence disabilities of visual impairment, autism, deafness/hard of hearing, and related child mental health issues. Pilot project serves southeastern NC.

Exceptional Children’s Assistance Center (ECAC) is NC’s Parent Training and Information Center, providing information about educational advocacy to families of kids with special needs. Parent Educators are available during business hours to provide families with individual assistance with IEP issues and advocacy for their child with the school system.

Family Support Network of North Carolina (FSN-NC) mission is to enhance the lives of NC children who have special needs or are at risk by providing support and information to families, by promoting family support, and by encouraging collaboration among families and service providers in the design and delivery of services. www.fsnnc.org

Feat of NC (Families for Early Autism Treatment) is a chapter of the national organization Families for Early Autism Treatment. Feat promotes applied behavioral analysis (ABA) for treatment of children with autism ?? knowledge of ABA for families and professionals educate the community about autism and ABA, influence legislative issues that affect autism.

Services provided: local chapter provides literature on ABA and will match parents to others who are using ABA. Also has a list of consultants in NC who specialize in ABA. The national chapter has a newsletter, a lending library, teaching material, support group meetings, parties, fieldtrips and fundraising events

The Mariposa School is a school for children with autism.  It provides one-on-one language instruction to children with autism.  The teaching methodology used is based on behavior analysis.  The curriculum used in the Mariposa School incorporates the principles of Verbal Behavior Analysis (VBA).  Located in Cary, NC.

Meredith Autism Program (MAP). The Meredith Autism Program (MAP) is a behaviorally based, early intervention program for preschool children with autism. Behavior modification principles and discrete trial teaching are used to help children reach their potential through the development of language skills, social skills, self-help skills, pre-academic skills, motor skills and play skills. MAP is designed to serve children with autism and pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) as well as provide undergraduate psychology students with experience in working with children with autism and PDD.

North Carolina Division of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services 'Single Portal' (MH/MR/DD/SAS). It is responsible for the oversight of mental health, mental retardation, developmental disabilities and substance abuse services throughout NC. It operates four psychiatric hospitals, five regional mental retardation centers, three educational institutions for children with serious emotional and behavioral disorders and three alcohol and drug abuse treatment centers. The division is also the single port of entry for mental health and related services. (Federal and state funds flow from the state to the area programs)

North Carolina Early Intervention Services. In North Carolina, early intervention refers to the system of services provided by many different agencies and programs for children birth to five and their families. This comprehensive, interagency system is called Together We Grow. There are two parts of Together We Grow - the Infant-Toddler Program for children birth to three and the Preschool Program for children ages three to five. The North Carolina Interagency Coordinating Council is an advisory group to both programs, and focuses on the birth to five age range.

The Arc of Orange County works through education, research and advocacy to improve the quality of life for children and adults with mental retardation and their families. They also work to prevent both the causes and the effects of mental retardation.

Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren (TEACCH). The TEACCH approach includes a focus on the person with autism and the development of a program around this person's skills, interests, and needs. The major priorities include centering on the individual, understanding autism, adopting appropriate adaptations, and a broadly-based intervention strategy building on existing skills and interests. The TEACCH mission is:
To enable individuals with autism to function as meaningfully and as independently as possible in the community; 

To provide exemplary services throughout North Carolina to individuals with autism and their families and those who serve and support them; 

As a member of the University community, to generate knowledge; to integrate clinical services with relevant theory and research; and to disseminate information about theory, practice, and research on autism through training and publications locally, nationally and internationally.
