Issue Brief Summary:
This Brief uses data from the FutureDocs Forecasting Tool (FDFT) to assess whether the supply and distribution of physicians in the United States will be sufficient to meet the future demand for healthcare services.
- Currently in 2017, supply and demand are near balance nationally
- Adequacy of physician supply varies by geography
- Potential policy levers, including increasing the number of GME slots for states in shortage, may improve the physician workforce ability to meet demand in those areas
