Rural and Urban Hospitals in the United States

The table below shows the number of rural and urban hospitals in the United States as of January 1, 2016. The source of the data is the 2016 Provider of Services file produced by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.  Hospitals are classified as rural by using the definition provided by the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy. Precise definitions of Medicare payment systems and descriptions of the types of hospitals are available on the Payment Basics page of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission’s website.
