Cecil G. Sheps Centers’ Groundhogs Kick Off Intramural Soccer Season with Spirit and Determination

The newly-formed soccer team, the Groundhogs, representing the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, made a spirited debut in the spring 2024 UNC intramural season. Comprised of a unique blend of faculty, staff, and students, the team showcased the power of collaboration and resilience, even in the face of a significant age gap and some challenging setbacks.

The Groundhogs, with a squad of 15 members and a mean age of 38, took to the intramural fields next to Carmichael Arena, competing against much younger teams with an average age of 19. Despite the physical demands of the season, which led to sore muscles and a serious injury—a torn Achilles tendon suffered by Jacquie Halladay (Defensive Back and Sheps Investigator)—the team displayed remarkable perseverance and camaraderie.

“Playing with such a diverse group has been incredibly rewarding,” said Kristie Thompson, the team captain. “We faced tough competition and physical challenges, but our teamwork and enthusiasm never wavered. We had a blast together!”

The Groundhogs’ roster featured: Mukesh Adhikari, Nejma Benzaari, Abhishek Bhatia, Emma Grace Flinchum, Evan Galloway, Susie Gurzenda, Jacquie Halladay, Mark Holmes, James Kim, Paul Lanier, Tyler Malone, Laura McFadyen, Helen Newton, Sean Sylvia, and Kristie Thompson.

Throughout the season, the Groundhogs exemplified a spirit of innovation and community building, forging new relationships and bolstering team spirit both on and off the field. “It was amazing to see everyone come together,” said Mark Holmes, “Striker, I guess” and Director of the Sheps Center. “We not only improved our soccer skills but also built lasting connections.”

As the spring season concludes, the Groundhogs face the challenge of filling the gaps left by graduating players Nejma Benzaari, James Kim, and Laura McFadyen. The team is actively seeking new members for the upcoming fall intramural season.

“Only the toughest souls have what it takes to be a Groundhog,” Tyler Malone, Center Back/Midfield and Sheps Investigator added. “Or anyone with a campus rec membership.  That will also get you on the team.”
