Announcing New Editors-In-Chief JAMDA: Dr. Phil Sloane and Dr. Sheryl Zimmerman
The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine and JAMDA – The Journal of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine are proud to announce the appointment of our new JAMDA Editors-in-Chief: Philip D. Sloane, MD, MPH, and Sheryl Zimmerman, PhD.
Dr. Sloane is the Elizabeth and Oscar Goodwin Distinguished Professor of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He attended medical school at the Medical College of Ohio, completed a residency and fellowship in family medicine at the University of Miami School of Medicine, and earned his Masters in Public Health at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health. Dr. Sloane’s impressive and varied career has included service in settings including nursing homes, dementia care units, group homes for persons with disability, hospitals, PACE programs, office practices, emergency departments, and more. He has over 200 peer-reviewed publications and has co-authored two popular text books. “I have always admired the Society for its focus on clinical care of frail, vulnerable older persons,” says Dr. Sloane. “I look forward to helping JAMDA further advance its mission.”
Dr. Zimmerman is a University Distinguished Professor, Associate Dean, and Director of Aging Research, School of Social Work, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received her Masters and Doctorate at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and has conducted groundbreaking research and intervention studies in nursing homes and assisted living communities, and served as a clinician in a range of long-term care settings. Dr. Zimmerman is Past Chair of the Social Research, Policy, and Practice Section of the Gerontological Society of America, has published more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, and is the national leader in assisted living research; in 2016, she was recognized as the nation’s top-ranked social work scholar in the field of aging. “Under Dr. Morley’s leadership, JAMDA has become an authoritative outlet for research on post-acute and long-term care medicine,” says Dr. Zimmerman. “Moving forward, we’ll encourage submissions in an even broader array of long-term care services and supports, and with clear practice and policy relevance.”
Drs. Sloane and Zimmerman have co-directed the University of North Carolina Program on Aging, Disability, and Long-Term Care in the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research for almost 20 years. The program’s interdisciplinary research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Alzheimer’s Association,
and other foundations, and includes observational studies, clinical trials, and community-based research projects. Both Drs. Sloane and Zimmerman have served as JAMDA reviewers, presented at multiple Society educational programs, served on Society committees, and have a long and impressive list of national and international honors and awards.
A search committee was appointed in late 2015, and the search process for a new editor began in early 2016, with active recruiting and vetting of candidates through the end of 2016. The search committee interviewed finalists at the Society’s 2017 Annual Conference in Phoenix, and presented its recommendation to the Board of Directors at that meeting.

Sloane and Zimmerman for their extensive experience and knowledge in the varied settings of post-acute and long-term care, their proven track records as mentors and published authors, and their vision for the future of JAMDA,” said Society Executive Director Christopher Laxton, CAE.
JAMDA’s retiring Editor, John Morley, has served as Editor-in-Chief since 2007, and is credited with greatly increasing the journal’s impact factor, raising submissions, and successfully raising the profile of the journal both domestically and internationally. Drs. Sloane and Zimmerman’s first issue of JAMDA will publish in January 2018.
