COURSE OBJECTIVES

Authorship issues. What are the responsibilities of authorship and co-authors? How do you avoid authorship disputes? What is the relationship between inadequate citation and plagiarism? What are the issues with ghost and guest authorship?

Conflict of interest. Guidelines for disclosure of financial interests in research. Role of private industry in sponsoring health services research. Importance of the right to publication of research results, regardless of sponsorship.

Relationship of health care advocacy to research. How to differentiate selective use of data to advocate for (or against) a political or policy position from research. How to craft research questions, study design, analyses and reports to be as policy-relevant as possible.

Confidentiality issues. How to protect subject confidentiality in health services research. Are the guidelines different when the subject of the research is the behavior and outcomes of health care professionals rather than that of patients?
