Prof. Emla Fitzsimons is a Professor of Economics, based at the Centre for Longitudinal Studies at University College London. She studies the process of human development across the life course, and in particular how experiences and circumstances in early life and childhood affect causally the acquisition of skills later on. Emla is also the Director of the Millennium Cohort Study, a UK-wide longitudinal birth cohort study following children born at the turn of the new century. She leads both the scientific design and strategic direction of the study, alongside its operational delivery. The cohort has had seven major sweeps of data collection to date, from ages 9 months through 17, alongside online data collection during the COVID-19 pandemic. All data is freely available for researchers to access via the UK Data Service.
