Dr. Warren Newton will give a seminar on “Interprofessional Education, Interprofessional Practice, and Outcomes” on Thursday, January 28, 2:00-3:30 p.m. in the Rosenfeld Conference Room. AHEC has a long history working in interprofessional education (IPE) and practice (IPP). Dr. Newton will describe innovative approaches to IPE and IPP, highlighting successes, lessons learned, and how to navigate some of the tricky issues that arise along the way.
Dr. Newton is the Director of the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program and the Vice Dean for the UNC School of Medicine. NC AHEC has 9 regional centers, 2400 employees, 16 residencies and 450 faculty. Its mission is to help the transformation in health care necessary to improve the health of the people of NC. AHEC works across the continuum of care, across professions and across the state. Dr. Newton served as Vice Dean for Education at the UNC School of Medicine from 2008 to 2013. During that time he led the LCME accreditation, curriculum reform, and the development of branch campuses at Asheville and Charlotte with the integrated longitudinal curriculum. Dr. Newton also serves as the William B. Aycock Professor and Chair of Family Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His major research interest is the organization and effectiveness of health care. He is Chair of the Board of Advisors for the Cecil G. Sheps Health Services Research Center, Founding Chair of Community Care of Central Carolina (CCCC), and directs the Carolina Health Net uninsured initiative. He founded the North Carolina Improving Performance in Practice Initiative, now the NC AHEC Practice Support Program, which has engaged over 1200 primary care practices. Nationally, Dr. Newton leads the ABMS Committee on Continuing Certification, serves on the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCMS) and the IOM Global Forum on Innovations in Health Professional Education.
