Gordon DeFriese Receives UNC Lifetime Achievement Award

 

Gordon H. DeFriese, PhD, longtime former director of the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, has received the 2026 Jonathan B. Howes Lifetime Achievement Award from UNC–Chapel Hill’s Retired Faculty and Professionals Association (RFPA).

The award recognizes retired UNC faculty whose careers have demonstrated exceptional service, leadership, and contributions within the University and beyond. DeFriese received the honor on April 8 at the RFPA’s annual Lunch & Learn program.

DeFriese led the Sheps Center for 27 years, shaping its mission to produce rigorous, policy-relevant research that improves health and health care in North Carolina. Under his leadership, the Center grew into a nationally respected hub for interdisciplinary health services research and a trusted resource for policymakers.

In addition to his work at Sheps, DeFriese held faculty appointments across multiple UNC departments and served in influential roles nationally and internationally, including appointment to the first U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. His career reflects a lasting commitment to public service, mentorship, and improving population health.

The Sheps Center community is proud to see Gordon honored with this well-deserved lifetime achievement award. We are deeply grateful for his decades of visionary leadership, steady guidance, and unwavering commitment to public service, which laid the foundation for the Center’s enduring impact in our communities.
